These Easy Cream Cheese Wontons taste like they came straight from a restaurant! These delicious wontons have a crispy shell and are filled with a delicious cream cheese filling. Dip these wontons in sweet and sour sauce and you have the perfect Asian-inspired appetizer that is better than takeout.
When my husband and I were first married (over 10 years ago), our favorite thing to do was get some Panda Express after a long day of work and sit on the ground of our old apartment and eat our takeout while we watched a movie.
Fast forward 10+ years and we love getting Chinese takeout so we don’t have to take our 4 rowdy kids out to a restaurant!
I love both of these memories so much and whenever I have Chinese food it brings me back to these moments, enjoying delicious food and spending time with my favorite people!
So whatever your reason is for making a little Chinese food and avoiding restaurant takeout, you came to the right place.
These Easy Cream Cheese Wontons are perfectly crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside.
How to make homemade cream cheese wontons:
Although these homemade wontons are fried, don’t let it scare you! They are easy to make and can be fried right on the stove top.
Start by combining softened cream cheese, garlic powder, sugar and green onion in a mixing bowl until well incorporated.
Place wonton wrappers on a clean, flat surface. Drop a teaspoon of cream cheese mixture in the middle of each wonton wrapper.
Beat egg and brush the edges of the wonton wrappers with egg. I think it is easiest to dip your finger in the egg and brush it along the edges of the wrapper, but if that bothers you you can use a pastry brush.
Pinch the corners of each wonton wrapper together in the center. I do that by taking opposing sides and pinching them together and then repeating it with the other opposite sides.
Make sure to seal the top of each wonton closed so it will stay intact during frying.
Fill a large pot over medium-high heat with vegetable oil until the oil is about 2 inches deep. To fry the wontons, you want the oil to be around 350 degrees F.
Place 6-8 wontons at a time in the hot oil, turning them as needed, until evenly browned (about 3-5 minutes).
Carefully remove wontons from hot oil and place on a plate covered with a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
Serve with sweet and sour sauce, for dipping.
These wontons don’t need to be cooked to a certain temperature, but you just want to be sure that they are heated through and the outside is a nice golden brown.
Enjoy!

Do you think these could be air-fried? I am new to the whole air fryer thing and have been looking for different things to try.

Melissa says:
We air fried homemade wontons this week. We made pepperoni, and cheese filled ones. They turned out great. We cooked them on 380 for 4-5 minutes.

Mark Mathis says:
We love those. The last time I made them for us, I added some real crab meat to the mixture. Yummy! You can use crab stick meat, if you like. We will try the pepperoni and cheese next time. Thanks for sharing!

Debra Struckland says:
After you have fried the wontons can you reheat them later or the next day and they’re still have that crispy crunch?
-
Cyd says:
When you have leftover fried wontons that you want to remain crisp, wrap loosely in foil, reheating gently in the oven at 300 degrees F for about 10 minutes.

Cyd says:
I looked up some baked Wonton recipes and the filling is similar ingredients. Here are the baking instructions after assembling them.Place wontons in a single layer onto the prepared baking sheet that has been sprayed with non stick cooking spray. Place into oven at 400 degrees and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
